"Improv is a Set of Skills" by Barry McAlister - Fun2GrowOn Consulting - April 2026
When people hear the word improv, they tend to picture one thing:
Someone on stage,
Standing in the spotlight...
Trying to be funny.
And yes… sometimes that’s true. I do that.
But that’s not what we’re really talking about.
Because improv isn’t just performance –
It's a set of skills.
Real, practical, use-them-on-Monday-morning skills.
Still, I see it all the time.
Leaders and teams hesitate.
There’s this moment of:
“Wait… are we about to have to be funny in front of people?”
Nope.
No one is trying to get you on Saturday Night Live…
(…except that one hilarious guy in Finance—you know exactly who I mean.)
What we’re actually doing is teaching people to:
- think on their feet
- respond instead of react
- navigate the unexpected
- and build real connection in real time
Sometimes I even call it “interactive experiences” instead of improv.
It sounds a little safer.
But here’s the truth:
Applied Improv is leadership.
It’s problem-solving in motion.
It’s learning to take in new information, adapt quickly, and move forward…
Without freezing or forcing it.
When you practice these skills, something shifts.
You show up with more creativity.
More adaptability.
More awareness of the people around you.
And yes… a little more willingness to step just outside your comfort zone.
Because that’s where the good stuff lives.
People often see me and Laura at events and get a glimpse of this.
They laugh.
They relax.
They connect.
And somewhere along the way, they realize:
“Oh… this isn’t scary.
This is actually useful.”
Turns out, getting out of your head and onto your feet—
even just a little—can change how you show up at work.
So no… improv isn’t about becoming a comedian.
It’s about becoming more present.
More connected.
More effective.
And maybe—just maybe—enjoying the process a little more along the way.
Because at the end of the day…
It’s not just about performing.
It’s about learning to Laugh, Learn, and Grow—
personally and professionally.
