The Secret to Charismatic Leadership: It's Not About You
Jun 09, 2025
The Secret to Charismatic Leadership: It's Not About You - What makes someone a truly charismatic leader? At the 2025 Maxwell IMC Conference, John Maxwell shared a powerful message that shifted how I think about leadership: charisma isn’t about how people see you—it’s about how you make others feel.
Charismatic Leadership
Charismatic leadership is rooted in relationships. It’s warm, present, and fully engaged. Charismatic leaders can draw people in because they are genuinely interested in others. And when you become interested in others, they often become interested in you. Not because you tried to impress them, but because you showed up fully, listened well, and made them feel seen.
Charisma Starts with Intentionality
Charisma is not a personality trait. It’s a choice. One that begins with focusing on others.
Maxwell reminded us that "the entire population of the world, with one minor exception, is composed of other people." Zig Ziglar said it best: "If you help people get what they want, you'll get what you want." Charismatic leaders get over themselves. They shift from asking, "How can I impress?" to "How can I serve?"
When we focus on others, we find purpose. Success is what you do for others.
Habits of Charismatic Leaders
Here are the intentional habits that truly charismatic leaders develop:
- Believe the Best in People
We all have good days and bad days. Charismatic leaders choose to see the good in others and call it out. They believe in people before the people believe in themselves. And they say it out loud—privately and publicly. A kind, affirming word can become a turning point for someone else. - Add Value to People
You are either a plus or a minus in people’s lives. Are you allowing others to breathe easier, or are you sucking the energy out of the room? If you’re not intentional about adding value, odds are you're unintentionally subtracting it. - Learn What Matters to People
Everyone wants to make a difference. Learn what matters to the people around you so you can help them do something meaningful. - Be Emotionally Intelligent
Charismatic leaders are self-aware and attuned to the emotional temperature of others. They respond with empathy and presence. - Share the Credit
They don’t need the spotlight. In fact, they shine the light on others. They check their ego and give heartfelt recognition. - Practice Active Listening
They make others feel like the most important person in the room. They open their ears and hearts, ask thoughtful questions, and listen with curiosity and care. - Be Authentic and Vulnerable
Charisma without authenticity is manipulation. True charisma is rooted in genuinely valuing people and being real with them. - Build Bridges for Others
Charismatic leaders are generous with their network and knowledge. They connect people, create opportunities, and guide others to places they wouldn’t reach alone.
Leading With Presence and Purpose
John Maxwell closed with a powerful reminder: In the later years of his leadership journey, his greatest joy is building bridges. Helping people cross gaps, scale obstacles, and get from where they are to where they want to be.
That’s what I want to do, too. At Fun2GrowOn, our mission is to Laugh, Learn, and Grow together. And nothing brings us more joy than helping others take that next right step—with confidence, connection, and yes, a little charisma.
Let’s build bridges, together.
